How to Prepare for Your Senior Session
Hello! My name is Jayda, and I’m the photographer behind the lens at Jayda Wise Photography. I’ve created this “How to Prepare for Your Session” series to help you feel confident, relaxed, and fully prepared for your senior shoot—because this season of life deserves to be captured in a way that feels authentic and unforgettable.
Everything shared here is based on my professional experience and is meant to serve as guidance, not strict rules. Every senior is different, and your session should reflect you. If you have ideas, concerns, or special requests, please reach out—I’m always happy to personalize your experience.
Senior Sessions: Celebrating Your Story 🎓✨
Senior year is such a huge milestone. It represents growth, resilience, personality, and the exciting future ahead. Your senior session isn’t just about photos—it’s about capturing who you are in this once-in-a-lifetime season.
Whether you’re bold and outgoing, calm and creative, athletic, artistic, academic, or a little bit of everything—this session is about highlighting your individuality. There is no “right” way to be a senior. You don’t have to know how to pose or what to do—that’s my job. I’ll guide you every step of the way so you feel confident and natural in front of the camera.
1. The Vision ✨
First things first—what do you picture when you think about your senior photos?
Are you walking through a sunlit field in a flowing dress?
Downtown with an edgy, city vibe?
On the football field in your jersey?
In a studio with clean, modern portraits?
Maybe something soft and editorial—or bold and dramatic?
The clearer your vision, the better I can bring it to life. Feel free to send inspiration photos, Pinterest boards, outfit ideas, or color palettes. We can build a session that feels completely you.
2. Outfits & Styling
a. Variety is key
I recommend bringing 2–3 outfits if your package allows it (Available for Courageous and Winner packages, not Strong due to time). A great combination might include:
• One casual look
• One dressy or elevated look
• One outfit that reflects your personality or extracurriculars
Layers (jackets, hats, jewelry) can add dimension without needing a full outfit change.
b. Fit & comfort
If you don’t feel comfortable, it will show. Choose pieces that fit well and allow you to move naturally. Avoid constantly adjusting straps, waistbands, or necklines during your shoot. When you feel good, you look confident.
c. Hair, makeup & grooming
Keep it true to you. Professional hair and makeup can photograph beautifully, but it’s not required. If you wear makeup daily, stick to your usual style with slightly enhanced definition. If you don’t usually wear much, don’t feel pressured to change that.
Guys: fresh haircuts are great—but schedule them about a week before your session so they look natural rather than “just cut.”
3. Choosing a Studio Session
If you choose a studio setting, a studio fee will apply. I split this fee with my clients to keep sessions accessible. The minimum studio share is $20, which covers roughly half of the rental cost. Larger spaces or extended sessions may require a higher fee.
Studio perks include:
• Weather-proof scheduling
• Controlled lighting
• Privacy for outfit changes
• Clean, timeless backgrounds
Studio sessions are perfect for bold fashion looks, cap-and-gown portraits, or modern, editorial-style images.
4. Choosing an Outdoor Session
Outdoor sessions are scheduled around lighting conditions and the sun’s position. While I can shoot in various conditions, I strongly prefer:
• Golden Hour: Just after sunrise or before sunset, offering soft, warm light (lasting ~30–40 minutes)
• Blue Hour: Twilight just before sunrise or after sunset, creating a cool, cinematic tone (lasting ~20–30 minutes)
These times vary by season, but generally fall between:
• Winter: 4–5:30 PM
• Summer: 5–6:30 PM
Outdoor sessions provide natural scenery, movement, and a relaxed atmosphere—without a studio rental fee.
5. A Few Important Things to Keep in Mind 💛
a. Confidence grows during the session
It’s completely normal to feel a little awkward at first. Most seniors start out saying, “I’m not photogenic,” and end the session saying, “That was actually so fun.” Give yourself time to warm up—I’ll handle the posing and direction.
b. Authenticity over perfection
Your senior photos should feel like you—not a version of you that feels forced. Laugh loudly. Be serious if that’s your vibe. Bring your personality. The best images often come from in-between moments.
c. Bring meaningful items
Consider bringing:
• Letterman jackets
• Sports equipment
• Musical instruments
• Art supplies
• College acceptance letters
• Cap & gown
These details tell your story and make your gallery uniquely yours.
d. Rest & preparation
Get good sleep the night before. Drink water. Eat beforehand. Small self-care steps make a big difference in how you feel and photograph.
This is such a powerful season of transition, and I’m honored to document it for you. One day, these images will represent the bridge between who you were and who you’re becoming.
If you have questions, ideas, or want help planning your vision, I’m always here. I can’t wait to celebrate you and everything this milestone represents. 💛
