How to Prepare for Your Family Session

Hello! My name is Jayda, and I’m the photographer behind the lens at Jayda Wise Photography. This guide is part of my “How to Prepare for Your Session” series, created to help you feel relaxed, confident, and excited going into your family session.

Everything shared here is based on my professional experience and is meant to be helpful guidance—not strict rules. Every family dynamic is beautifully unique. If you have questions, ideas, or specific needs you’d like me to know about, please reach out. I’m always happy to personalize your experience.

Family Sessions: Capturing Connection 💛

Family sessions are about connection, not perfection. They’re about the way your child reaches for your hand, the laughter between siblings, and the quiet moments you don’t realize you’ll miss someday.

I specialize in working with children and families, and my approach is relaxed, playful, and natural. My goal is for your session to feel more like time together than a photoshoot—because the best images come from genuine moments.

There is no such thing as a “perfect” family. All family structures, personalities, abilities, and dynamics are welcome here. If anyone in your family has special needs, sensory sensitivities, or accommodations that would help the session flow more smoothly, please let me know in advance. I’m always happy to adjust.

1. The Vision ✨

Before your session, take a moment to think about the overall feel you want.

Do you imagine cozy and intimate, with soft embraces and quiet moments?

Playful and energetic, with movement, laughter, and exploring together?

Elegant and timeless, with neutral tones and classic posing?

There’s no wrong answer. Once you have a general vibe in mind, feel free to send inspiration photos, color palettes, or ideas my way so I can better understand your vision.

2. Outfits & Styling

a. Coordinating, not matching

Choose outfits that complement one another rather than match exactly. Soft neutrals, earth tones, and subtle patterns photograph beautifully. Avoid large logos or busy graphics, as they can distract from connection.

b. Comfort matters

If you’re uncomfortable, it will show. Choose clothing you can move, sit, and cuddle in comfortably—especially for kids. Layers and textures add interest without sacrificing comfort.

c. Shoes & details

Shoes are often visible, especially in outdoor sessions. Neutral or simple footwear works best. Don’t forget the little details—clean hands, simple hair styling, and minimal accessories go a long way.

3. Choosing a Studio Session

Studio sessions include a studio fee, which I split with my clients to keep pricing flexible. The minimum studio share is $20, covering roughly half of the rental cost. Longer sessions or premium studios may require a higher share.

Why choose a studio?

• Weather-proof scheduling

• Privacy for outfit changes

• Controlled lighting

• Easy bathroom access

Studios are ideal for timeless, clean imagery with minimal distractions.

4. Choosing an Outdoor Session

Outdoor sessions are scheduled based on natural light. While I can shoot in full sun if necessary, I prefer:

• Golden Hour: Just after sunrise or before sunset, creating warm, flattering light

• Blue Hour: Twilight before sunrise or after sunset for a cooler, moodier tone

Timing varies by season, but generally falls between:

• Winter: 4–5:30 PM

• Summer: 5–6:30 PM

Outdoor sessions offer natural movement, open space for kids, and beautiful scenery without a studio rental fee.

5. A Few Things to Keep in Mind 🌿

a. Let go of perfection

The goal is connection—not everyone looking at the camera at the same time. Trust me to guide you into natural moments and gentle prompts.

b. Focus on each other

Talk, laugh, snuggle, and play with your kids. When your attention is on them instead of the camera, the images become more meaningful.

c. Kids will be kids

Wiggles, curiosity, and big emotions are all part of the story. I’ll work with your child’s natural rhythm and capture them just as they are.

d. Timing is everything

Try to avoid scheduling sessions during nap times or right before meals. Choose a time when your kids are usually at their happiest and most regulated.

e. Breaks are always okay

A quick pause to reset can make a big difference. Breaks are never a waste of time and can lead to the sweetest moments afterward.
