How to Prepare for Your Maternity Session

Hello! My name is Jayda, and I’m the photographer behind the lens at Jayda Wise Photography. This guide is part of my “How to Prepare for Your Session” series, created to help you feel confident, comfortable, and celebrated during your maternity session.

Everything shared here is based on my professional experience and is meant to be helpful guidance—not strict rules. Every pregnancy journey looks different, and your session should reflect you. If you have questions, ideas, or specific needs, please reach out. I’m always happy to personalize your experience.

Maternity Sessions: Honoring This Season 🤍

Maternity sessions are about slowing down and honoring a season of life that passes far too quickly. This is a time filled with anticipation, strength, vulnerability, and love—and all of that deserves to be documented.

My approach to maternity sessions is calm, supportive, and intentional. Whether this is your first baby or your last, your story matters. All bodies, all journeys, and all emotions are welcome here. If there are any physical limitations, sensitivities, or accommodations that would help you feel more comfortable during your session, please let me know ahead of time.

1. The Vision ✨

Before your session, think about how you want this chapter to feel.

Soft and intimate, with quiet moments and gentle movement?

Bold and powerful, celebrating your strength and glow?

Light, romantic, and dreamy with flowing fabrics and natural light?

There is no right or wrong vision. Once you have a general feel in mind, you’re welcome to send inspiration photos, color palettes, or ideas so I can better understand your style and bring it to life.

2. Outfits & Styling

While I do have some props available, my collection is intentionally minimal so I can keep my pricing flexible and affordable for my clients. You’ll want to provide outfits, costumes, and decorations specific to your vision.

I can digitally add elements like balloons, animals, or confetti, but keep in mind that edited additions may differ slightly in color or realism from physical props. If certain items are a must-have, please let me know what you’re bringing so I can plan accordingly.

a. What photographs beautifully

Flowy dresses, fitted gowns that highlight your bump, and soft fabrics tend to photograph wonderfully. Neutral tones, earth colors, and muted pastels are timeless and flattering.

b. Comfort comes first

You should feel comfortable and confident in whatever you wear. If something feels restrictive or uncomfortable, it will show. Many clients choose to bring a second outfit for variety.

c. Undergarments & details

Consider seamless or nude undergarments that won’t show through fabric. Simple hair, natural makeup, and minimal accessories often photograph best—but do what makes you feel beautiful.

3. Including Your Partner or Children

Partners and older siblings are always welcome in maternity sessions. These images often become some of the most meaningful—tiny hands on your belly, shared laughter, quiet anticipation.

For children, keep expectations relaxed. I’ll guide them naturally and allow space for genuine connection rather than forced posing.

4. Choosing a Studio Session

Studio sessions include a studio fee, which I split with my clients to keep pricing flexible. The minimum studio share is $20, covering roughly half of the rental cost. Longer sessions or premium studios may require a higher share.

Studio sessions offer:

• Privacy and comfort

• Controlled lighting

• Easy access to restrooms

• A calm, intimate setting

Studios are ideal for clean, timeless maternity imagery.

5. Choosing an Outdoor Session

Outdoor maternity sessions are scheduled based on lighting and weather conditions. While I can shoot in full sun if necessary, I prefer:

• Golden Hour: Just after sunrise or before sunset for warm, flattering light

• Blue Hour: Twilight just before sunrise or after sunset for a softer, moodier feel

Timing varies by season, but generally falls between:

• Winter: 4–5:30 PM

• Summer: 5–6:30 PM

Outdoor sessions offer movement, fresh air, and natural scenery that beautifully complements maternity portraits.

6. A Few Gentle Reminders 🌿

a. This is not a performance

You don’t need to know how to pose. I’ll guide you every step of the way with gentle direction and encouragement.

b. Take breaks when needed

Sitting, stretching, or pausing is always okay. Your comfort is the priority.

c. Trust your body

Every pregnancy looks different, and every body tells a story worth documenting. This session is about honoring yours.

d. Timing your session

Maternity sessions are typically scheduled between 28–34 weeks, when your bump is beautifully visible and you’re often still comfortable enough to move with ease.
