How to Prepare for Your Child’s Birthday Session

Hello! My name is Jayda, and I’m the photographer behind the lens at Jayda Wise Photography. I’ve created this “How to Prepare for Your Session” series to help you feel confident, relaxed, and excited going into your shoot—because your experience should be just as magical as the images themselves.

Everything shared here is based on my professional experience and is meant to serve as guidance, not rigid rules. Every session (and every child!) is unique. If you have questions, ideas, or special considerations for your session, please don’t hesitate to reach out—I’m always happy to help tailor your experience.

Birthday Sessions: Let’s Celebrate Your Little One 🎉

There’s something incredibly special about celebrating another year of your child’s life. Birthdays deserve to feel magical, and I’m a big believer in making your little one feel like the star of the show.

While I’m a multi-functional photographer, I specialize in working with children—so birthday sessions are always extra fun for me. I’m truly over the moon to capture these once-a-year milestones.

No child is “too difficult.” Regardless of abilities, needs, or personality, every child deserves a joyful and successful session. If your child has any special needs or accommodations that would help me better support them during the shoot, please let me know ahead of time. I’m more than happy to adapt so everyone feels comfortable and celebrated.

1. The Vision ✨

First things first—what do you envision for your session?

Is your child outdoors, painting on a white canvas in the sunshine?

Inside a studio, surrounded by a balloon arch with a cupcake in hand?

Maybe dressed as royalty, seated in tall grass with soft, elegant edits fit for a prince or princess?

Great news—I can do all of that.

The more clearly you can picture your vision, the better I can bring it to life. Feel free to send inspiration photos, color palettes, or theme ideas my way!

2. Props & Outfits

a. Props & Decor

While I do have some props available, my collection is intentionally minimal so I can keep my pricing flexible and affordable for my clients. You’ll want to provide outfits, costumes, and decorations specific to your vision.

I can digitally add elements like balloons, animals, or confetti, but keep in mind that edited additions may differ slightly in color or realism from physical props. If certain items are a must-have, please let me know what you’re bringing so I can plan accordingly.

b. Comfort is key

Choose outfits that are comfortable—or bring a backup option. Scratchy fabrics and tight fits can quickly turn excitement into frustration.

c. Snacks & hydration

Bring a non-messy snack and water. Avoid crumbly or sticky foods, and opt for a spill-proof water bottle if possible (trust me—it’s a lifesaver).

3. Choosing a Studio Session

If you choose a studio setting, a studio fee will apply. I split this fee with my clients to keep things accessible. The minimum studio share is $20, which covers roughly half of the rental cost. Longer sessions or premium studios may require a higher fee.

Studio perks include:

• Flexible scheduling regardless of weather

• Easy access to bathrooms

• Privacy for outfit changes

• A controlled, comfortable environment

4. Choosing an Outdoor Session

Outdoor sessions are scheduled based on lighting conditions and the sun’s position. While I can shoot in full sun when needed, I strongly prefer:

• Golden Hour: Just after sunrise or before sunset, with soft, warm light (lasting ~30–40 minutes)

• Blue Hour: Twilight just before sunrise or after sunset, casting a cool blue tone (lasting ~20–30 minutes)

These times vary by season, but generally fall between:

• Winter: 4–5:30 PM

• Summer: 5–6:30 PM

Outdoor sessions offer natural scenery and open space, without a studio rental fee.

5. A Few Important Things to Keep in Mind 💛

a. Flexibility is everything

Celebrate the moment—not the pose. Let me handle the jokes, tricks, and gentle guidance. It’s normal for kids to be shy or hesitant at first, and my goal is always for them to leave happy and smiling.

b. Experience over perfection

When you invest in me, you’re investing in an experience—not just photos. Please don’t stress over forcing smiles. Children sense emotions easily, and calm, playful energy goes a long way. We’re capturing your child as they truly are—quirks, curiosity, and all. Often, the candid moments become the most treasured images.

c. Timing matters

Avoid scheduling during naps or meals. Immediately after a nap can also be tricky for some toddlers. Choose a time when your child is usually at their happiest. That said, I will always work patiently with any child—even on tough days.

d. Breaks are okay

A well-timed five-minute break can work wonders. Pauses are never a waste of time—just something to consider when selecting your session length.

e. For shy kiddos

I have several gentle approaches, including:

1. Allowing extra time for your child to observe and warm up (may require a longer package)

2. Using familiar props you bring for comfort and engagement

3. Starting from a distance and gradually moving closer

4. Including parents in early shots, then slowly transitioning them out

5. Maintaining a calm, playful, pressure-free environment
